We prepare to welcome a new baby in many ways. We decorate the baby’s room, take classes to learn how to care for a baby, buy the latest gadgets and equipment, but we generally don’t prepare ourselves emotionally or psychologically for the challenges of motherhood. Pregnancy is a great time to learn extra coping skills, develop more self-compassion, and to work through old family dynamics.
The way we relate to ourselves often becomes how we relate to our children. By examining our relationship with ourselves and our family of origin, we develop the capacity to choose what we pass on to the next generation.
Pregnancy can also be a great time to begin a meditation practice and to develop an openness to our inner experiences in order to cope with the challenges and fully experience the joys of motherhood.
